I read it through the Grapevine

Through HaGefen (the Vine) Publishing CWI assists the Church in Israel to fulfil its God-ordained task of making disciples. Starting with this Herald, in each issue we will introduce you to some of the publications of HaGefen, so you can pray more knowledgably for the ministry of “the Grapevine”. In this brief article, we look at My Only Comfort and the forthcoming Westminster Confession of Faith.

My Only Comfort is the first Hebrew translation of the historic Heidelberg Catechism, a classic devotional statement of faith set in the form of 129 questions and answers in three sections, dealing with Sin, Redemption and Christian living. The title in the Hebrew version is taken from the first question: “What is your only comfort in life and death?” The answer is: “That I do not belong to myself but to my faithful Saviour Jesus Christ, in body and soul, in life and death. With his precious blood Christ paid completely for all my sins, delivered me from all the power of the devil and preserves me in such a way that, without the will of my heavenly Father, not even a hair can fall from my head. Indeed, all things work together for my salvation and therefore Christ, by his Holy Spirit, also assures me of eternal life and makes me sincerely willing and ready to live to him.”

Since the seventeenth century, the Westminster Confession of Faith has remained the fullest and most extensive statement of the Christian Faith. It was commissioned by the English parliament and drafted by an assembly of 121 Puritan clergymen meeting in Westminster Abbey. HaGefen’s version is at the translation stage and is due for publication in 2011. The full classic texts of both the Heidelberg Catechism and the Westminster Confession can be found on our website at

Volume 4 of the Children’s Illustrated Bible is due for publication in September and the next issue of the Herald will feature a full report on it.
